Gorilla Trek and Habituation Experience
Among the most rewarding activities on any Wildlife Safaris in the Eastern or Central part of Africa, Gorilla habituation experience cannot miss. Most travelers prefer getting closer to the rarely seen species of Gorilla by Gorilla trek but the habituation experience is more fascinating and awards more time while in the Jungles with these apes than the trekking.
With habituation, about four hours or more are allowed for tourists to be in the Jungle associating with these giant creatures. If you after this escapade, you can have it best in Uganda in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This Park consists of four sectors including Rushaga, Ruhija, Nkuringo and Buhoma sector but the experience is only offered in Rushaga.
It usually involves following the wild Gorilla family in the Jungle with the main aim of letting them get used to presence of human beings. It takes about 2-3 years for the family to be fully habituated – it will be constantly visited by rangers, tourists and researchers until it is familiar with presence of humans. After being fully habituated, the family will be declared open to be visited by travelers each day. All tourists heading for the habituation experience are advised to be at the Park headquarters or starting point early in the morning at 7:30 am for the briefing conducted to give an insight into the habituation process.
Travelers are as well advised on what to do and what not to do while in the Jungles. The briefing is often meant to ensure that all adventurers have an experience that’s worth the money paid. After briefing, the journey to the jungle starts in a group following the permanently established trails. You will trek in the jungle until you locate the Wild Gorilla family used for the habituation experience. When you discover presence of this family, you will be in the Jungles for about four hours while following movements of these apes, see them as they feed, construct temporary huts, play with colleagues and more.
This experience awards grand opportunities to take a number of photos and videos than the trekking experience. While in the Jungle, you are exposed to other Wildlife species like primates, insects, reptiles and birds As per now only one Gorilla family is used for habituation experience in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This family is called Bikingi Gorilla family. Not like trekking, for habituation, only four people are allowed for the experience per day. The permit for habituation experience costs $1500 USD per person and it is better when you book it in advance because few slots are offered per day.
Below are some of the rules and regulations you have to ensure or follow while in Bwindi for your habituation experience.
Maintain your voice at low tone while in the Jungle.
Follow all the instructions from the rangers.
- Keep a distance of seven meters from the Gorillas.
- Cameras with flush light are not allowed for use when taking photos.
- If you have any signs of infectious diseases, then you will not be allowed to be part of the habituation experience.
- Avoid imitating the Gorillas.
- To add on that, since the experience involves following the movements of the Gorillas, all participants have to be physically fit to keep up with the pace of the Gorillas.
You can also hire porters to carry your luggage. The minimum age for the habituation experience is fifteen years. Lastly tourists dropping in for the experience are advised to book accommodation around Rushaga sector.
